The Best of Me (2014)
Yes, another Nicholas Sparks story; The Best of Me was written much later in his career and was published in 2010 and then made into a movie in 2014. This again follows two main characters, Dawson Cole and Amanda Collier, from a very young age and follows their story until much later in their lives. Coming from different sides of the track, the two fall in love during high school but are forced apart due to family differences; the two rekindle later in life after not having communicated since they ended things when they were young, and reminisce on their time together and how much they cared for one another. Dawson and Amanda struggle to forget about their love and are forced to confront the choices they have made in the past but Amanda struggles to forgive Dawson for pushing her away in the past. The two withhold an unspoken connection from this point forward though they do not remain in contact, until something tragic happens and they are left further apart, yet also closer than ever before…
Notting Hill (1999)
Unlike the other two, this love story is not filled with tragedy and pain and luckily has a beautiful ending, leaving the viewer hopeful and happy. Notting Hill is a film from 1999 and tells the story of a famous actor from America, Anna Scott, and an average man from Notting Hill, William Thacker, who meet and fall hopelessly in love despite their drastic differences. From a kiss to a full-blown affair, the two become closer and closer but struggle to reconcile their drastically different lifestyles. The two actors portray two people in love so well; their love story is truly beautiful and though it isn’t necessarily relatable to the average person, it is definitely a story that I will forever adore.
The Vow (2012)
It is almost guaranteed that you will not make it through this movie without shedding a tear. It is genuinely one of the saddest romance movies I have ever seen and it will make you feel hopeless and heartbroken for most stages of the film. Basically, the two main characters, Paige and Leo, fall deeply in love, however, after they marry, Paige gets into a serious car accident resulting in severe memory loss and her not remembering Leo. Leo does all he can to rebuild their relationship to what it once was and make her fall in love with him again and rebuild their marriage. The way he feels about Paige and the way he does everything he can to rebuild their relationship is truly heart-warming. His love for her is so pure and real and this is presented so well in the film. A genuinely beautiful movie.
The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
This movie is definitely one that is more widely known and I’m almost certain most of you would have seen, and if not, definitely heard of. The Fault in Our Stars tells the story of two young kids, Hazel and Gus; they meet at a cancer support group while Hazel is suffering from cancer and Gus has been given the all clear. The two fall in love and embark upon a roller coaster of emotions, however, while on a trip together, their world falls apart as Gus reveals some heartbreaking news to Hazel. Their love just grows stronger and stronger and the movie really does depict young love so well. This movie will make you laugh, cry and smile, all while making you feel hopeful of true love. This is definitely a must see and a must read if you are interested in reading the original story written as a novel by John Green.
